What is cytokine storm?
The term "cytokine storm" was first used in 1993 to describe a type of immune disease called graft-versus-host disease, which involves abnormal levels of cytokines and affects multiple organs. Cytokine storms are well-known in rheumatologic diseases such as idiopathic arthritis, lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, pancreatitis, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and are also known in infectious diseases such as influenza virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, variola virus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (SARS-CoV). These storms are caused by an impairment of the balance between pro-inflammatory cytokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines, leading to excessive inflammation in the body.
Can CBD help reducing the cytokine storm?
A study published in May 2022 suggests that cannabis extracts may be able to help balance the immune system during cytokine storms by lowering levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and boosting levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The research found that high-CBD extracts decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increased the anti-inflammatory cytokines in human neutrophils and T cells.
While more research is needed to fully understand the potential role of cannabis in cytokine storms, these findings suggest that it may be a promising option for regulating the immune response and mitigating the harmful effects of excessive inflammation. However, it's important to note that further clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and determine the proper dosing and administration of cannabis extracts for this use.
As with any potential treatment, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before using cannabis for cytokine storms or any other health condition. It's also important to remember that cannabis is a complex substance and its effects can vary widely depending on the specific strain, dosage, and route of administration.
